KEY TAKEAWAYTurn a small set of seed keywords into an editorial map without mistaking Semrush's automated suggestions for pages that must all be published.

Know which problem Keyword Strategy Builder solves

Keyword Strategy Builder takes keyword research a step beyond generating lists. It proposes a map of topics, pillar pages and supporting pages so you can decide how your website should answer related questions. It is best used when your business already has a defined subject area and needs a coherent content architecture rather than hundreds of disconnected article ideas.

It does not know every nuance of your brand, verify your firsthand expertise or guarantee that the proposed pages will rank. Claim26 has not run the tool in a paid Semrush account or measured its output for this article. The workflow below interprets official vendor documentation and provides a realistic planning example, not a fabricated case study.

Check paid-toolkit access before following the steps

Semrush states that Keyword Strategy Builder is available with paid SEO Toolkit subscriptions. A free Semrush account should not be treated as proof of access to a fully generated content map. Check the product entitlement, any trial conditions, project limits and billing details shown in your own account before changing plans.

You can rehearse the editorial decisions without buying a subscription: build a spreadsheet containing proposed topic, current URL, reader question, page type and review status. That will not reproduce Semrush difficulty scores or algorithmic suggestions, but it is enough to detect obvious overlaps and establish whether a larger automated workflow is worth paying for.

Start with up to five closely related seed keywords

On the Keyword Strategy Builder homepage, Semrush allows up to five seed keywords to create a structured list. Imagine an independent specialty-coffee roaster serving English-speaking customers. Seeds might include « coffee beans », « espresso beans », « coffee brewing », « grind size » and « coffee freshness ». These terms are illustrative only; no live keyword-volume data has been collected for them.

Choose words belonging to one realistic audience journey. Do not combine a coffee shop's product range with an unrelated software consulting service and hope the generator creates a useful single structure. If the business serves multiple markets or languages, plan those as separate research contexts rather than copying one country's keyword suggestions into another market without review.

Distinguish structured topic maps from ordinary keyword lists

A structured list generated from seeds creates Topics and Pages, including possible pillar pages and subpages. A broad page such as « Guide to brewing coffee at home » can point readers toward focused pages for French press, espresso ratios and grinder settings when those subtopics warrant an independent explanation.

Ordinary lists are different: keywords collected from other Semrush modules, uploaded files or manual entries initially appear as a list to organize. They can later be grouped, but they should not be mistaken for an automatically generated topic hierarchy. Check the list type before wondering why your interface lacks a pillar-page map.

Interpret search volume and difficulty in context

Semrush prioritizes candidate pages using relevance to seeds, search volume, keyword difficulty, domain diversity and search-result features. These metrics help compare opportunities, but they are not instructions to write every suggested article. A term can have attractive search volume and still bring visitors who are unlikely to need your real products.

Filters such as Easy to Start, Quick Conversions and Higher Traffic Potential select different tradeoffs. Do not label an estimated opportunity a forecast of revenue. A beginner brewing guide and a commercial product comparison may each earn a place in the map, but for different reader needs and business outcomes.

Audit existing pages before approving new URLs

Suppose your store already has a thorough espresso grinder adjustment guide. A new suggestion for « how to dial in your espresso grinder » may target almost the same intent. Review the current page and the search results before launching a near-duplicate. Often the better action is to improve the existing page or merge its overlapping sections with another weak page.

Assign one preferred URL to each core reader question. Keep a content map with proposed keyword group, intent, existing URL, action — create, improve, merge or reject — and the supporting pillar page. This manual quality gate is essential because a keyword grouping algorithm cannot independently verify that every new article deserves to exist.

Connect pillar pages and subpages for navigation

A topic cluster should work for people, not just crawlers. The broad home-brewing page can introduce equipment choices and link to useful standalone guides, while a French press page can link back to the relevant overview. Make each supporting article answer one substantial, self-contained question, using original details and documented constraints.

Do not create pages that differ only by a keyword variant, a plural word or a year. Use descriptive link labels, keep the site's main navigation understandable and avoid linking to a page that is still a draft or intentionally excluded from search. The grouping proposal becomes valuable only when real visitors can follow the information path.

Export a practical editorial plan rather than a keyword dump

The page-details panel can show keyword metrics and allows exporting keywords or sending them to other Semrush tools, including Position Tracking. That does not mean an editorial calendar is ready for publication. Add writing ownership, required product knowledge, proof or source requirements, review date and a clear decision on whether the page is actually needed.

For a small store, publishing a helpful guide about grinder adjustment may be more sensible than launching dozens of thin product-keyword pages. Review customer support questions and actual purchase objections alongside the keyword map. Those signals are not replacements for search demand, but they make the editorial plan more useful.

Measure outcomes with the right tools and dates

After publishing, use Google Search Console to compare actual impressions, clicks and queries over specified dates and search types. Semrush Position Tracking can monitor selected terms when configured and included in the plan, but modeled visibility is not the same metric as Search Console clicks. Neither number alone proves that a visitor purchased coffee.

If two pages attract overlapping search queries, examine whether their content should be differentiated or consolidated. Maintain the map as a living plan rather than a one-time screenshot. Claim26's Keyword Gap and keyword research guides focus on discovering missing terms; this article is specifically about deciding how those terms become meaningful website pages.

When the Strategy Builder is not worth the subscription

If you simply need to find a handful of new questions, a basic keyword research process and a manual content inventory may be enough. Keyword Gap is a closer fit when the question is what competing domains rank for that yours does not. Keyword Strategy Builder is more specialized: mapping a larger set of related topics to pillar and supporting pages.

Read the official pricing and module access conditions before subscribing. The fact that a tool can group up to 10,000 keywords does not justify creating 10,000 pages. Prioritize usefulness, editorial accuracy and ongoing maintenance rather than pursuing an automatic list of suggested titles.
